Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you get started.

What is the minimum age to volunteer?

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to serve independently. Youth aged 13–15 are welcome with a parent or guardian who also volunteers. Some roles (such as the ID or tax clinic) require participants to be 18+.

Yes, for most roles. A Vulnerable Sector Check is required for any volunteer who will be in direct contact with guests. We can guide you through how to obtain one — many municipalities offer them at reduced or no cost for volunteers. The process typically takes 2–4 weeks.

Once your application and police check are complete, you'll attend a one-time volunteer orientation (approximately 90 minutes) with us. We cover our mission, policies, expectations, and how we work with guests. After that, your first shifts include side-by-side support from staff until you feel comfortable.

Comfortable, casual clothing is fine. Closed-toe shoes are required for all volunteers. For food handling roles, we provide aprons and gloves. Avoid strong perfumes or colognes — some of our guests are sensitive to scents.

Shifts are available seven days a week, with a range of morning, afternoon, and some evening options depending on the role. After your orientation, you'll be added to our scheduling system and can sign up for shifts that fit your availability. There's no minimum commitment required — though regular volunteers make the biggest impact.

Life happens — we understand. We ask for at least 24 hours' notice when possible so we can arrange coverage. Cancellations can be made directly through our scheduling system or by contacting the volunteer coordinator. Consistent last-minute cancellations may affect your ability to sign up for future shifts.

Yes. The Regeneration building is wheelchair accessible with accessible entrances, washrooms, and work areas. If you have a specific accommodation need, please mention it in your application.

Yes. We accept volunteers completing community service hours, high school co-op placements, and employer matching programs. We will sign the required paperwork and track your hours. Please bring any forms you need signed to your orientation.

Can't volunteer right now?

A gift of $4 provides a meal – and the reminder that someone belongs.

Every dollar given through Regeneration returns $18 of food and services to our community. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to serve – your support still does.
