There’s a particular kind of anxiety that builds when you walk into a grocery store knowing you can’t afford what your family needs.
You go anyway. Doing the math in your head while you walk the aisles. Putting things back, and leaving with less than you came for. Carrying that feeling home with you.
For one Brampton parent, that was the weekly routine. Two jobs, a child at home, and a fridge that never quite made it to the end of the week. He knew places like Regeneration existed, but the fear of what it would mean to admit he couldn’t do it alone had always been louder than the hunger.
Eventually, after sleepless nights, the fear got quieter. When he walked in, it smelled like produce.
Not a storage room, or a gymnasium with folding tables. There were shelves, aisles, shopping carts, and someone standing at the door to greet him, saying welcome, take your time.
He stood there for a moment. The anxiety he’d been carrying, the kind that follows you through every grocery run, every mental calculation, everything you put back, started to loosen its grip.
When he walked in, he wasn’t a charity case. He was a shopper, a guest.

The Marketplace at Regeneration Outreach Community isn’t a traditional food bank. There are no pre-packed boxes, no lineups to receive whatever happens to be available that week. Guests walk in, choose what they need, and leave with groceries for their family.
At Regeneration’s Marketplace, Brampton families shop and choose the food that’s right for their kids, the same way any of us would grocery shop. Our Meal Program keeps stomachs full, too, and this fall, gifts help families provide nutritious packed lunches as the school year begins.

Where Community Lives
More than a meal. A place to belong.
The line that became a community.
When Linda arrived from Cameroon in 2023, pregnant with her son Nathan, she couldn’t believe a place would hand out food and ask for nothing in return. She came back every Tuesday, and the 9 am line slowly became a community; neighbours trading job leads and small worries, held together by the need that brought them there.
Ask someone still in that line what this place means, and you get it plain:
“Without this place, most people wouldn’t survive. We need them — big time.”
For the first two years of Nathan’s life, every diaper came from Regeneration. She expected to find food and baby supplies. Instead, she found a community that made room for her — one where, as she puts it, “No one feels downgraded because they came to ask for food.”
That feeling stuck with Linda, so much so that when the chance came to give back, she took it. Through the Catholic Women’s League at St. Leonard’s Parish in Brampton, Linda came to volunteer, walking in for the first time through the back door: past the packing tables, the cleaning crew, and the staff who’d once served her, now part of the support she’d relied on herself.
You don’t graduate from Regen
Transformation at Regen doesn’t always mean coming back to give. Sometimes it means being ready to move on — and choosing to stay close. One of our youngest guests applied for a Canada Summer Jobs opening through South Asian Canadian Health & Social Services (SACHSS) and got it: eight weeks full-time, his own paycheque, and enough to step off Ontario Works.
By every practical measure, that’s the moment a person stops needing a place like Regeneration. But he came back anyway. Returning in a collared shirt to eat his bagged lunch with the staff, and to connect the next guest to the help that changed things for him.

Even after the need is gone, Regen is still where community lives. And it’s the perfect example of the work we do: the volunteers, the staff, and guests all together. Regeneration is not a service you graduate from; it’s somewhere you belong — at every stage of your journey.
